Let’s make our own chicken broth!!

This past week with conditions outside being cloudy and cold, I decided to try something new and make my own chicken broth. How amazingly simple, and healthy! First I checked out a recipe on America’s Test Kitchen. Then I filled a dutch oven with 1 1/2 quarts of water, two tablespoons of salt, two bayleaves, and one onion, and of course a whole fryer. Bring to a boil, then let simmer for two hours. America’s Test Kitchen recipe calls for 1/2 cup of chopped carrots, and 1/2 cup of chopped celery along with the onion which would have made my broth even more delicious. Next time I will add those items, but I was still very happy with how ours turned out.

Making our own broth is so much healthier than store bought! With all the talk about bone broth, and collagen, I have been anxious to try this out for my self and see if I could do it. So simple! I will freeze the chicken I took off the bones to put in soups. I tied cheese cloth around the bones and will also freeze them in a container and add them to my next soup broth, or pot of beans. Yes! I make a pot of beans every Tuesday. I can’t wait to add the home made broth and bones wrapped in cheese cloth for a healthier dish!

Boiling the chicken made our kitchen so fragrant, it was a great cooking experiment for a cold cloudy day. It was fun!! And now we will have the health benefits of healthy home cooked chicken broth, along with bone nutrients and collagen.

Join me next week, when I tell all of you what I learned about bread; just how healthy is the bread we are all eating??
